Q1. Why physical IT securityThe topic of security and protection of sensitive data and their systems, and thus managing IT security, is becoming increasingly important due to the rising complexity, increasing regulations from authorities, and ultimately growing threats. Major threats to industrial IT and OT include the intrusion of malicious software such as malware via removable storage devices and external hardware, as well as human error, manipulation, and sabotage. General IT ports or so-called endpoints, such as USB ports, network ports, fiber optic ports, and other input and output ports, are always the first level of potential threats to data breaches and cyberattacks on critical infrastructure systems. To minimize risks as much as possible, the protection of critical IT interfaces should always be considered. This is especially important to prevent malware that can be carried on USB storage devices and consciously or unconsciously introduced into networks. USB interfaces, as well as all other critical ports, pose an immediate danger. After all, USB ports are flexible to use; a USB stick or a mobile phone can be quickly plugged in, for instance, for unauthorized copying or unwanted data exchange. Seemingly harmless USB sticks found by an employee at any location could have been deliberately placed there by third parties and can pose a significant threat. If the employee connects this found stick to their workstation system, malware can be installed in the background—without the employees or administrators initially noticing.
